Rakim Lubin, former UConn basketball player, dead at 28

Rakim Lubin, a former college basketball player who spent a year with UConn, died Sunday. He was 28.

His death was announced by the Prestige Memorial Funeral Home in his hometown of Gadsden, Ala. No cause of death was disclosed.

Lubin, a three-star recruit nicknamed “Rock,” played his freshman year with the Huskies in 2014-15, averaging 6.5 minutes a game in 24 appearances.

The 6-foot-8 forward sat out the following season while transferring to Cal State Northridge, where as a sophomore during the 2016-17 season he averaged 8.5 points and 5.2 rebounds in 23 games, including 12 starts.

Lubin then transferred to LSU Shreveport of the NAIA for his junior season.

After starring at Gadsden City HS, Lubin played his senior year of high school at Buford in Georgia, where he averaged 20.2 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in leading the team to the 3A state championship game.

He was named the Georgia Sportswriters 3A Player of the Year.

According to his college bio pages, Lubin’s parents are Sabrina and Roger Lubin, and he was the youngest of seven children.
